About Lucy Loves Sitcom
Our
Story
Lucy Loves Sitcom is on a mission to unite fans of this much-loved but undervalued genre from around the world. We dive into UK and US sitcoms, old and new, and occasionally stray into other TV genres a bit too, but the main focus here is the laughs! I created Lucy Loves Sitcom to celebrate my obsession and to hopefully build a community of like-minded fanatics...

So, why sitcom? How did this come to be a thing? It just so happens that I have a particular specialism in the subject as an early career academic. That's right; I'm so obsessed and interested in sitcoms that I am getting a PhD in the topic. It's what I've been obsessed with since I can remember. Now I feel driven to serve my fellow geeks (who think as deeply about TV as I do) by sharing my knowledge and insight.
Blending a mixture of humour, enthusiasm and criticism, Lucy Loves Sitcom will hopefully offer fans a place to connect on a deeper level with the TV they know and love, and build a community of like-minded listeners.

Episodes will be a mix of solo chat and conversations with guests. They'll vary between Deep Dives (e.g.: one series, or a single character within a series), to Theme Episodes (humour, representation, gender, feminism, mental health, etc.), and good old generic chats between like-minded sitcom enthusiasts!

Why a podcast?
Being in academia, I could just write something as my outlet, right? I mean, I already am with my thesis, so why not stick to that?

Well, first off, I can't exactly gush in academic papers. In fact, it can be hard to be overtly positive when employing criticism at times. I wanted a place to build a positive vibe, whilst also employing a little due criticism and insight, and a paper might not be the place to do that successfully.
More to the point, though... it's about impact and engagement. One of the key issues with academia, I find, is that there is such amazing, insightful research on media being conducted all the time - and yet so few will ever read it because so little gets into the public domain. This is a huge part of my inspiration to launch this podcast, because there is so much we can learn about culture, history, and the world as a whole when we study what is popular in media.
I want people to get something from this - to learn about the sitcoms they love and to gain new perspectives that they might not have been privy to, but I don’t want it to be a dry series of lectures either... I think that would take away quite a lot of the enjoyment. I will ramble when I am enthusiastic and excited, and I will be critical with a healthy dose of ‘what can be done better here?’ when I feel there is room for improvement in representation, production, et cetera.
But I want this to be an interesting, informative, but fun way for people to engage with the awesomeness that is sitcom TV, and for that reason - a podcast is the best and most accessible way to achieve that.

Guested on Amie Kelbing's awesome Spinster Life Podcast to talk about sitcoms and the representation of women on TV/Film:
1. And You're Mary Tyler Moore: Our Favourite Sitcom Spinsters.
2. We're Not Horsin' Around: The Female Characters of BoJack Horseman.
First sitcom crush was Chandler Bing.
